Philippines awards 63 offshore wind contracts

Wind Energy – Philippines

The Philippines has awarded 63 offshore wind contracts with a total potential capacity of 49.928 gigawatts, which is enough to supply the country’s future electricity demand, the Department of Energy (DOE) said Sunday.

Launched last year, the Philippines Offshore Wind Roadmap showcases the country’s potential offshore wind resources, estimated at 178 gigawatts, reported Xinhua.

Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos signed an executive order on Wednesday to accelerate the development of the country’s offshore wind resources to meet the country’s target of 35 per cent and 50 per cent renewable energy contribution to the energy generation mix by 2030 and 2040, respectively.

The DOE said the move will hasten the rollout of offshore wind projects in the country by mandating a policy and administrative framework for the optimal development of offshore wind resources.

“With heightened investor interest in energy projects, especially in renewable energy, it is crucial to have a clear framework that would speed up offshore wind development and approvals of necessary permits,” Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla said.
