CO2-reduced steel towers for Thor

Wind Energy – Sustainable Steel Towers

On social media Sven Utermöhlen, CEO Offshore Wind at RWE Renewables, said that his company is the first developer in the world to install CO2-reduced steel towers from Siemens Gamesa at the Thor offshore wind farm.

While offshore wind already has one of the lowest life-cycle carbon footprints for electricity production, we won’t settle at that. We are always striving for greater circularity and to make sure we reach our net-zero goals.

The tower production of wind turbines accounts for a large part of their CO2 emissions. The use of greener steel for these towers, however, reduces CO2 emissions by at least 63 percent in the tower steel plates compared to conventional steel.

50 percent – 36 of the 72 wind turbines at Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, Thor, will be equipped with Siemens Gamesa’s GreenerTowers. These steel towers possess the same properties and high-quality of previous wind turbine towers but with that one vital difference – a greatly reduced carbon footprint.

With installation set for 2026, I am excited to see this innovation pave the way for even greener wind power.
