General – China
China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) has connected to the grid the 900 MW Shanwei Jiazi offshore wind project located about 25 km off the city of Shanwei, southern China.
The project comprises 128 wind turbines and is China’s largest unsubsidized offshore wind project.
Off the coast of Shanwei, CGN now operates 1.4 GW of offshore wind capacity as the company commissioned another 500 MW offshore wind project in November 2021 (Shanwei Houhu).
The two Shanwei wind projects will be able to generate 4.5 TWh/year of electricity and are expected to allow a reduction in emissions of nearly 3.5 MtCO2/year by avoiding the use of nearly 1.45 Mt/year of coal.
China’s offshore wind capacity stood at 26.4 GW at the end of 2021. This is the world’s largest operational offshore wind capacity, even if it represents only about 1% of China’s total installed capacity. Around 17.4 GW of offshore wind projects were commissioned in 2021 alone. The country’s overall wind capacity reached 328 GW by end-2021.
China has more than 24 GW of wind under construction and more than 36 GW under development.
