Equinor and its partners in the Arctic Snoehvit gas field will invest 13.2 billion Norwegian crowns ($1.34 billion) to upgrade the Hammerfest liquefied natural gas plant.
Hammerfest LNG, also known as Melkoeya, delivers 6.5 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas per year, enough to cover the energy demand of around 6.5 million European homes, or 5% of all Norwegian gas export.
Equinor and its partners plan to install onshore gas compressor units at Melkoeya, which will extend plateau production from Snoehvit, they said.
In addition, they will replace the plant’s gas turbine generators with an onshore power connection, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 850,000 tonnes per year.
