Fugro secures Med Wind floating wind farm survey in Italy

Wind Energy – Geophysical and Environmental Studies

Renexia, a subsidiary of TOTO Holding, has granted Fugro a survey contract for the Med Wind floating wind farm in the Strait of Sicily.

Med Wind is one of the largest renewable energy projects planned for the Mediterranean Sea, with 190 floating turbines totaling 2.8 GW of installed capacity.

Fugro will offer Renexia with extensive marine geophysical and environmental studies, deploying equipment and specialized staff to obtain full Geo-data at the proposed wind farm site and along the two export cable corridors.

After Fugro collects the relevant Geo-data at the site’s 300 m to 900 m sea depths, the analysis will be used to provide guidance on geohazard risk mitigation and choose the most secure path for installing the two export cables. In addition, the final integrated environmental impact assessment (EIA) submission to Italy’s Ministry of Energy Transition will be informed by these findings.

The 850-square-kilometer wind farm, which will be located 60 kilometers off the Italian coast, has the potential to reduce annual CO2 emissions by 2.7 million metric tons while providing enough electricity to power 3.4 million homes once it is fully operational.
