Fossil Energy – Abigail Field
Ministers are facing a backlash from climate groups after giving the green light to a new oil field in the North Sea just weeks after the Cop26 climate talks in Glasgow.
The Abigail oil and gas field off the east coast of Scotland was quietly approved by the government’s Oil and Gas Authority (OGA) last month, defying climate experts who warned at the conference Glasgow in November that no new fossil fuel development would be compatible with global climate goals.
Climate campaigners oppose the field, which will be developed by Israeli firm Ithaca Energy, because its dwindling gas reserves will do little to help secure the UK’s energy supply while contributing to emissions of carbon.
An OGA spokesperson said: “The OGA will continually hold the operator accountable for emission reductions under our stewardship.”
