Samsung Heavy Industries sells drillship

Friday, December 3 2021

Fossil energy – drillship

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries announced earlier this week that it had found a buyer for the first drillship ordered in 2014.

According to the company, the drillship was sold to a European drilling company without sharing the buyer’s identity. Delivery is scheduled for the first quarter of 2023.

The drillship was originally ordered by Ocean Rig in 2014. After agreeing with Samsung on delivery delays for newbuild rigs in 2016, the drilling company was subsequently acquired by Transocean in 2018. In 2019 Transocean canceled orders for the two first drillships Ocean Rig ordered (Ocean Rig Santorini and Ocean Rig Crete).
