Ukraine needs to integrate with EU energy market

Thursday, December 2 2021

General – Ukraine

To integrate with the EU energy market, Ukraine needs to implement European rules and increase the flexibility of its power system.

Yaroslav Demchenkov, Deputy Minister at Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.

This is what Yaroslav Demchenkov, Deputy Minister at Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, stated after his  participation in the Ukrainian Energy Security Dialogue on Ukrainian and regional energy security issues as part of the project “Analytical support of Ukraine’s foreign policy in the energy sector.”

In order to fully integrate the Ukrainian and European energy markets after synchronization with ENTSO-E in 2023, Ukraine must create conditions for the Ukrainian electricity market to operate according to Europe’s current rules, procedures and regulations.

Ukraine must ensure full integration with the European regulatory framework in terms of rules for the functioning of the electricity market, as well as the protection of vulnerable consumers.

It is also important that the synchronization process is accompanied by financial stabilization in the entire electricity market.

Further development of the generation structure in Ukraine’s integrated power system is necessary for the future integration of markets.

This process will rely on increased grid flexibility and will include building quick response flexible generation assets, installation of energy storage systems, hydrogen technologies and development of renewable energy sources.
