Wind energy – construction
Ramboll has partnered with Kiewit – the largest offshore fabricator in the US – to design and build a high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) offshore substation topside for the South Fork Wind project being led by Ørsted and Eversource.
The project will bring New York its first offshore wind farm and will be the first American built offshore topside platform in use for the wind industry. Once operational, the 12-turbine offshore wind farm is expected to power over 70,000 homes on Long Island.
“We are excited that our decades of offshore wind expertise and US-based energy experts are contributing to the beginning of a bright new future for offshore wind in the United States,” Darek Letkiewicz, Ramboll Senior Vice President, Energy US, says. “This is only the start of greater things to come.”
Over the next two years, the 1,500-ton, 60-foot-tall substation topside will be built at Kiewit’s facility in Texas before being transported to the Eastern seaboard. The platform will be designed as a Type A normally unmanned platform to be manned only during service and repair work. Control and monitoring activities will be carried out from the onshore control station.
