Total pulled plug on Myanmar gas project

Monday, April 5 2021

French supermajor Total has pulled the plug on its planned ultra-deepwater Block A-6 giant gas project offshore Myanmar as the security situation continues to deteriorate with hundreds of civilians killed since the 1 February military coup.

“The teams were instructed to discontinue the project as soon as the crisis began. In the current situation, it goes without saying that we do not intend to invest further in the future,” Total chief executive Patrick Pouyanne said on Sunday.

Total and its partners had planned to enter the front-end engineering and design stage for the A-6 project in 2021.

The operator will also halt its current drilling campaign offshore Myanmar and decommission the rig in May.
