One of the aspects Vattenfall wishes to improve on the Dutch Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) wind farm project is the sustainability of the monopile (MP) cover.
This is a device which protects the inside of the monopile, once it has been installed in the seabed.
Vattenfall asked MP fabricator Sif to come up with a smart and environmentally friendly solution. Different Dutch parties joined forces. Stimulus programme Kansen voor West, polyester manufacturer Theuws and engineering company Enersea started brainstorming and developed the first concept. Enersea asked colleague engineering company Femto to carry out the Finite Element Analysis.
Enersea, Femto and Theuws developed the detailed design which led to a first prototype. The outcome of the test with the prototype was very promising
