Shipbuilder Damen Shipyards is cutting around 1050 jobs worldwide.
In the Netherlands, 173 jobs will disappear and 870 jobs will be cut in Romania. Damen employs approximately 13,000 people worldwide.
Damen Shipyards has posted a huge loss last year. The shipbuilder was struggling with various problem projects, the risks of which turned out to be much greater than initially anticipated. Due to provisions and depreciation, the net loss amounted to 287 million euros, the highest loss in the family company’s 93-year history. The consequences of the coronavirus outbreak for the economy also had an impact on the shipbuilder: orders were not forthcoming and production was lower.
Damen indicates that it cannot be ruled out that ‘more organizational adjustments will prove to be necessary.’ However, the adjustments are necessary to remain a healthy company that can take advantage of the good long-term prospects in the various shipbuilding and repair markets.
